The 2-Minute Rule: How to Stop Procrastinating and Take Action

Struggling with procrastination? Try the 2-minute rule — a small but powerful tool from productivity expert David Allen.

The rule has two parts:

  1. If a task takes less than 2 minutes — do it immediately.
  2. To build a habit — start with a version that takes just 2 minutes.

Examples:

  • “Read before bed” → “Read one page”
  • “Start meditating” → “Sit and breathe for 2 minutes”
  • “Go for a run” → “Put on running shoes”

Why it works:

  • Reduces resistance
  • Creates momentum
  • Reinforces identity (“I’m someone who shows up”)

Big change starts with small wins.
